Twitter in the Classroom

Does anyone use Twitter in their primary classroom? Just thinking out loud here -- but I can see a lot of great possibilities by having a class Twitter account and linking to classrooms all over the country/world. Teaching students to share their learning in this way could be very powerful.

What do you all think?

  1. I think it would be very cool but I know there is NO way my district will unblock the site and allow us access. :(

  2. We don't twitter but we do use a wiki. I have it closed so the kids and I can communicate with each other. Many of my students write to me using the wiki from home. It works great for having discussions about social studies and science topics.

  4. Hi!. I am a tech team leader for the primary teachers in my building and we (intermediate tech team leader and I) finally convinced our tech department to unblock Twitter for us. WeI held a Technology Thursday meeting with our staff where we introduced the GOOD power of Twitter to our colleagues. We have since gotten our principal as well as a handful of staff on it. It is a great way to get connected to other educators.
I've also used websites like Little Bird Tales with my students to create stories. I've then tweeted the link to our story, and had teachers from around the world leave comments to my class about their book. The students LOVED it!
I also connected with author, Peter Reynolds on Twitter. We set up a Skype session where he read, The Dot, to my students. It was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! Instead of making a thank you to send to him, as a class, we tweeted a thank you to him. He is now one of MY followers on Twitter.
If you don't have a Twitter account, I would suggest it right away! I'm MissCarlson111 on Twitter! I would also suggest SkypeReadingTutor to follow as well. She is a reading specialist who sets up Skype reading sessions with classes. She read a book about the desert to my class this year. It was fantastic!
